Becoming a Volunteer

Why Volunteer?

One in three young people grow up without a mentor to offer real-life guidance. This affects approximately 16 million kids in America (and this includes nine million at-risk youth). We know kids with quality mentors are more likely to experience increased school attendance and academic achievement, demonstrate responsible decision-making, and develop skills to better navigate relationships at school and at home. At-risk youth with a mentor make better choices:

  • 52% are less likely than their peers to skip a day of school
  • 55% are more likely to be enrolled in college
  • 46% are less likely than their peers to start using drugs

And when mentored, those same at-risk youth give back to their communities:

  • 81% are more likely to participate regularly in extracurricular or sports activities
  • 78% are more likely to volunteer regularly in their communities
  • 90% are interested in becoming mentors themselves
